Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
There are some Salafi people in our area. But we do not have teachers who can properly explain this manhaj to us and give us correct religious knowledge.
So we wish that we and our children learn the religion and grow up on the Quran and the Sunnah, according to the way of the Salaf as-Salih.
But we do not know where to start, or how to get religious knowledge.
What are the ways for us and our children to learn correct religious knowledge?
Also, how can we find opportunities to learn the Arabic language? Can you give us some guidance on this?
Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
Alhamdulillah, your wish for yourself and your children to learn the religion on the way of the Salaf as-Salih is a great blessing from Allah. Here, in short, are the ways to do it:
Knowledge is learned directly
In the methodology of the Salaf, the foundation of knowledge is sitting with the scholars and learning from them directly. Sadly, many people today do not know this basic principle. Just saying “I watch it on YouTube or on other social media” is not the right way.
So look for places where the scholars of Ahl as-Sunnah are, or where students who learned from the scholars are teaching. Even if you live far away, try to attend, with your family, the classes held in masjids where the students of the scholars teach, at least from time to time. Learning directly in this way, and attending such classes in these masjids now and then, is the foundation of seeking knowledge.
Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen (rahimahullah) was asked:
Question: Is listening to audio recordings and lessons enough, in place of travelling to seek knowledge?
Answer: “Listening to audio recordings is not enough in place of travelling to seek knowledge. Travelling to seek knowledge is better, because the student sits in front of the scholar and learns from him directly. Sometimes a doubt comes up, or he needs to ask again, and he does not get that chance when he only listens to recordings. But there is no doubt that he will benefit if he listens to the recordings, and that is better than leaving knowledge altogether. Still, if he travels to seek knowledge, that is better and more beneficial. However, our advice to someone who lives in a place where there are no scholars is that he should listen to the recordings of scholars who are trusted both for the depth of their knowledge and for their honesty in conveying it.”
Majmu Fatawa wa Rasail Ibn Uthaymeen, 26/144
Listen to and read reliable translations of the lessons of trusted scholars living today, such as Shaykh al-Allamah Salih al-Fawzan, Shaykh al-Allamah Abdul Muhsin al-Abbad, Shaykh al-Allamah Abdullah al-Bukhari, Shaykh Arafat al-Muhammadi, Shaykh Abdullah adh-Dhufayri, Shaykh Khalid adh-Dhufayri, Shaykh Abdul Ilah al-Juhani, Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ghalib al-Umari and other scholars like them. Also study the lessons given by students who graduated from Islamic universities, or who learned directly from the scholars in their centres.
Listen, and write it down
Listening to lessons is not enough. Keep a notebook: write down what you learn, and read it again and again. This is what makes a person a real student of knowledge. Knowledge that is not written down is soon forgotten.
Salih, the son of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (rahimahullah), said:
“A man saw an inkpot with my father and said to him, ‘O Abu Abdillah, you have reached this rank, and you are the imam of the Muslims!’ He replied, ‘With the inkpot until the grave.’”
Ibn al-Jawzi, Manaqib al-Imam Ahmad, p. 37
Where to begin
For where to begin, and which books to study in what order, see the “Start here” pages on our site:
- For everyone: Clear guidance for daily life →
- For students of knowledge: Structured learning through the books →
Benefit only from trusted sources
We strongly advise you to take lessons and benefits only from trusted Islamic websites, and from websites that have a firm connection with the scholars. Great caution is needed here, because today many people who oppose the methodology of the Salaf go around under the very name of “Salafiyyah”.
Arabic, step by step
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) said:
“Moreover, the Arabic language itself is part of the religion, and knowing it is an obligation. Understanding the Quran and the Sunnah is obligatory, and they cannot be understood without understanding Arabic. Whatever is needed to fulfil an obligation is itself obligatory. Then, there is a level of Arabic that every individual must learn, and a level that is enough if some people in the community learn it (a communal obligation, fard kifayah).”
Iqtida as-Sirat al-Mustaqim, 1/527
Along with everything mentioned above, start learning Arabic step by step as well.
In sha Allah, online Arabic classes will soon begin for those who have already gained a good amount of religious knowledge, especially in aqeedah.
Stay connected
If possible, at least once every three months, visit masjids where the religious knowledge of Ahl as-Sunnah is taught. Attend the course series (dawrat) and the Ramadan classes. Muslim brothers and sisters meeting one another and loving each other for the sake of Allah will strengthen your iman.
For sisters and girls
Soon, in sha Allah, we will begin online Quran classes for sisters and girls. Join them and benefit.
May Allah grant you and your family beneficial knowledge and righteous deeds.
And Allaah Knows the best.
