Who we are
IslamTamil is a Tamil Islamic app run by Muhammad Aslam and his brothers. There is no company or organisation behind it: writing the articles, recording the audio, answering questions — all of it is done by Muhammad Aslam and students who have studied under scholars and graduated.
You can write to us at [email protected] about anything on this page.
The short version
The app works without an account. You never tell us who you are unless you choose to write to us.
- Your location stays on your phone. Prayer times and the Qibla are worked out on the device. We never receive your position.
- We show no advertisements, we run no analytics, and we track nobody.
- We sell nothing and share nothing, except with the few services listed below that are needed to deliver the app.
- The only personal information we ever receive is what you type into a form and send: your name, your email and your message.
What we collect, and why
1. When you ask the ustadh a question
What: the name you type, the email address you type, and your question.
Why: so Aslam can read it and reply to you by email. There is no other way to answer you.
Where it goes: it is stored in our database (Supabase, on servers in Sydney, Australia) and a copy is emailed to Aslam through Resend so that he sees it. Nobody else can read it — the app itself has no way of reading questions back, not even your own.
How long: until Aslam deletes it. He keeps questions so he can look back at what has been asked and answered.
Your question is private. It is not published. If a question would help many people, he may write about the subject later — without your name and without your email.
2. When you comment on an article
What: the name you type, the email address you type, your comment, and which article it is on.
Why: comments appear under the article for other readers.
Where it goes: to our website (islamtamil.com, WordPress). Every comment is held for approval before anyone can see it.
What is public: your comment and the name you typed. Your email address is never shown publicly — it is only visible to Aslam in the site’s admin.
How long: as long as the article is on the site, or until you ask us to remove it.
3. Notifications about new articles
What: a notification token — a long random code that identifies this installation of the app to Google’s and Apple’s notification systems — and whether the phone is Android or iOS.
Why: so we can send you a notification when something new is published.
Where it goes: it is created by Expo’s notification service and stored in our database. It contains nothing about you: no name, no email, no phone number, no location.
How long: until you uninstall the app or the token stops working.
4. Crash reports
What: when the app breaks, a report of what broke — the error, the line of code, the model of phone and the version of the operating system.
Why: so faults can be found and fixed. Without this, a fault on your phone reaches nobody.
Where it goes: Sentry, on their European servers.
What is deliberately removed before it is sent: your name, your email, any text you have typed, the addresses of pages you were reading, your location, your phone’s name, and any identifier that could tie two reports to the same phone. The app strips these before sending, and Sentry is also configured not to store IP addresses.
How long: 30 days, then Sentry deletes it.
You can switch this off. Settings → App → Crash reports. With it off, nothing is sent at all.
Your location
The app asks for your location so it can show accurate prayer times and the Qibla direction where you are.
That position is used on your phone and is never sent to us. The prayer times are calculated on the device, which is also why they work with no connection.
One thing you should know: to turn your coordinates into a city name, the app asks the phone’s own operating system, and Android and iOS do that lookup on Google’s and Apple’s servers. That is a function of the phone rather than something we receive — we only get the name back through the phone. You can avoid it entirely by choosing your city by hand in Settings.
Things that happen when you open content
When the app fetches an article, an audio recording, a Qur’an page font or the radio stream, the server it comes from sees your IP address, as it would if you opened any web page. We use:
- islamtamil.com — articles, audio, Qur’an page fonts, translation files
- SoundCloud and YouTube — audio and video inside articles
- quran.com, everyayah.com and quranicaudio.com — Qur’an recitations
- asurahosting.com — the radio stream
- Google Docs viewer — to display PDFs on Android (the address of the PDF is sent to Google)
We do not receive anything about you from these; they are simply where the content is kept.
The services we use
| Service | What it does | Where it stores it |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Stores questions and notification tokens | Sydney, Australia |
| Sentry | Receives crash reports | European Union |
| Resend | Emails your question to Aslam | Not stated to us |
| Expo | Creates the notification token and delivers notifications | Not stated to us |
| WordPress on islamtamil.com | The website, the articles and the comments | Not stated to us |
| Google / Apple | Deliver notifications to your phone; turn coordinates into a city name | Worldwide |
We have named a place only where we know it: Supabase’s region is set on our project and Sentry’s is fixed by the address the app sends to. For the others we have not been told where their servers are, so we do not guess. All of them are companies outside Tamil Nadu, so assume your question may be stored abroad.
What we never do
- We never sell your information, to anyone, for any price.
- We never show advertisements.
- We never track you, across this app or anywhere else.
- We never build a profile of you.
- We never share what you write with anyone beyond the services above.
Deleting what we hold
Write to [email protected] and say what you would like removed — your question, your comment, or both. We will delete it and tell you when it is done.
You do not have to give a reason.
To stop notifications, turn them off in the app or in your phone’s settings; to stop crash reports, use the switch in Settings → App.
Children
The app is for everybody and holds nothing unsuitable for children. We do not knowingly collect anything from a child under 13. If a child has sent us a question or a comment, write to us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If this changes, the date at the top changes with it. If the change is significant, we will say so in the app.
