What Is the Ruling If One Rak‘ah of the Jumu‘ah Prayer Is Missed?

📘 English Translation

Fatwa of the Eminent Scholar, Imam Ṣāliḥ ibn Fawzān al-Fawzān (May Allah preserve him)

Question:
May Allah reward you with goodness and grant you well-being. A message has been received from one of our brothers among the listeners, who says:
“I missed the first Rak‘ah of the Jumu‘ah (Friday) prayer. I prayed the second Rak‘ah with the Imam, then stood up to complete the Rak‘ah that I had missed. Is my prayer valid, or what should I do?”

Answer:
Yes. Whoever catches one Rak‘ah of the Jumu‘ah prayer has indeed caught the prayer. He should add one more Rak‘ah to it, and his Jumu‘ah prayer will be complete.

However, if a person catches less than one Rak‘ah—for example, if he joins after the Imam has raised his head from the bowing of the second Rak‘ah — then he should join the congregation with the intention of Dhuhr. After the Imam finishes the prayer, he must stand and complete the Dhuhr prayer as four Rak‘ahs.
